Cam and Andrew’s story
Andrew was asked to be Cam’s Citizen Advocate, to show him loyalty, friendship and the protection that comes from friendship.
Andrew says, “I was asked to be Cam’s Citizen Advocate because his service was demonising him and there was a real risk that he would be institutionalised. I was matched to Cam because he has a passion for big trucks and at that time I worked for a very large TPG company. Once I become his Citizen Advocate his level of care improved immediately and a new service provider was found. Cam now has one-to-one care and a respect from his staff about his interests and hobbies. He has been moved to much better accommodation and out of a dangerous neighbourhood. His health has been stabilised and as such his life expectancy has lengthened. I get a call from Cam most mornings to check to see if I’m ok because Cam wants me, his advocate and mate, to be around for a long time”.
“I have been Cam’s Citizen Advocate for over 18 years. We spend time together doing regular things mates do and simply by being there for Cam and doing regular things with him has provided Cam safety from being neglected, abused and have a better life.”
